Synopsis

It was in the third century when Saint Agatha of Sicily, who had offered her virginity to Christ, rejected the sexual advances of Quintianus, the prefect of Sicily. Bewildered, he then sent her to a brothel, where she did not lose her virginity either, so the diplomat despot cut off her breasts and then burned her alive. It is said that, in the face of the eruption of Etna, the year following her martyrdom, the locals pleaded with her to save them and at then the lava that was flowing into the city stopped. The patron saint of Sicily, Saint Agatha is attributed with the power of rising from the ashes and has been invoked in the face of tragedies resulting from fire or breast issues such as problems with lactation. If one were to happen today, in all likelihood it would be breast cancer.
