Synopsis

Envoltura is a journey through several scenes inspired by the idea of syncope as corporeal and historical movement as embodied in the figure of the vanguard dancer Antonia Mercé, La Argentina (1890-1936).
On 18 July, 1936, La Argentina went to Donostia-San Sebastián to see an exhibition of Basque dances organised in honour of Father Donostia (José Gonzalo Zulaika), dying suddenly four hours later on hearing of the uprising by Franco’s troops and the imminent start of the Spanish Civil War. La Argentina’s death is significant insofar as she had been the first artist to be decorated by Provisional Government of the Spanish Second Republic. This decoration transformed her, to some extent, into its cultural representative, an allegory personified.

‘Envoltura’ attempts to understand the physical convulsion of the artist in conjunction with collective feeling, as a reflection of a break in the line of history. This break is repeated at different moments and in different ways, through artists like the Japanese dancer Kazuo Ohno, who recovered the figure of La Argentina in his first dance Butô, created in response to the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
This piece was created specifically for the context of the “1930. En el pacto de San Sebastián. Historia y síncope” (1930: In the Pact of Donostia-San Sebastián: History and Syncope) exhibition, commissioned by Isabel de Naverán, within the 2016 "Tratado de Paz" (Peace Treaty) programme.
