Synopsis

We Basque have always had a special relationship with the sea. We have been skilled navigators, both in the fishing and the commercial sector. But also in piracy. At times it was difficult to differentiate the three activities.

Many ships began their voyage taking iron and tools to Lisbon or La Rochelle, in order to exchange them there for goods needed to go whaling and fishing for cod. But if, on the way towards the fishing grounds, they came across a weaker enemy, they transformed themselves into corsairs in order to add their prey to their revenue pool.

Therefore, Haatik transports us to that era. To imagine life on the coast, to discover the coexistence of diverse cultures originating in the ships’ voyages, and to understand the beliefs amongst men and women.

Company

Since 2011 the Gipuzkoan dance company, besides working on its own productions, has collaborated with different artists, thereby offering different artistic proposals.
The Basque language and culture make up the foundation of the company, and even though it works in numerous styles, it always tries to build bridges which unite new ways with its roots.
The company debuted with the creation Errimak Oinetan in 2012. This entertaining proposal which united dance with bertsolaritza or improvised oral poetry was performed in countless towns throughout the Basque Country and was well received by both the general public and critics.
Since then, it has had the opportunity to collaborate with choreographers like Iker Arrue and Vitali Safronkine, working towards forming the components of the company and carrying out different creations.
In 2014, with Itsas Lapurrak (Sea thieves), it opened up a new direction in which it began to create street performances too. And since then it has offered them at international festivals such as Kalealdia in Bilbao, Tac in Valladolid, Kaldearte in Vitoria-Gasteiz and Umore Azoka in Leioa.
Its most prominent production in recent years was the Paredes Que Hablan (Walls that talk) project, initiated by DSS2016 (European Capital of Culture 2016). There, it worked in collaboration with renowned artists and, under the artistic direction of the filmmaker Koldo Almandoz, the company carried out five creations reflecting profoundly on coexistence. Creations which were carried out with the celebrated composer Pascal Gaigne.
